Lake Mývatn is situated in the north of Iceland on the edge of the desert Ódádahraun (Lava field of violent deeds). The pseudocarters in the lake were formed about 2,500 years ago when, after heavy volcanic eruptions in this area, lava flowed into the lake. Steam which was trapped under the lava broke through it and created this craters. In the left background the high temperature geothermal fields around mountain Námafjall.
