Over time, falling snow piles up in mountain recesses, and ever so slowly the weight of accumulating snow compact lower layers into dense ice. When the ice becomes thick enough, it starts to remove downhill.By the eruption of the Eyjafjalla volcano in 2010 these glacier tongue of the Sólheimajökull glacier in southern Iceland is contaminated with ash that the ice shades in all kinds of varries gray and even black color.
